Wayne Jay Benson, 83

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, Wayne Jay Benson, 83, of Smelterville, Idaho; passed away peacefully on May 4, 2016, at the family home of Smelterville.  He was born May 28, 1932 in Kellogg, Idaho; Wayne was the son of Sherman J. and Gladys A. (Swanson) Benson.

Wayne had lived in the Silver Valley until the age of 12, when the family moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho.  He attended and graduated from the Bonners Ferry High School in 1950.  Wayne then furthered his education and attended the Pacific Lutheran College and the University of Idaho.  He then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 - 1955, during the Korean Conflict.  After serving in the Army, Wayne returned to the University of Idaho, receiving his bachelors degree in music education.

Wayne married Peny Prendergast on July 3, 1962 in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho.

Wayne started his teaching career at the Craigmont High School of Craigmont, Idaho for three years.  He finished his music career at the Kellogg Junior High School, until he retired.  After retiring, Wayne served in security for the Sunshine Mine and later served as a driver for the Senior Meals On Wheels program.

Wayne was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Kellogg, had served on the Church council and sang in the Church Choir.  He was also a member of the Kellogg B.P.O.E. #1841 for twenty-three years and a member of the Smelterville Lions Club.

Wayne loved and enjoyed fishing and camping with Peny, family and friends; he also enjoyed duck hunting with his dear friend Eddie Nelson.

Wayne is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-four years Peny Benson of the family home of Smelterville, Idaho; two sons Tom (Vicky) Benson of Smelterville and Eric (Andrea) Benson of Spokane Valley, Washington; five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at 11:00 A.M., at the American Lutheran Church of Kellogg with Rev. Ken Bartle officiating.  A reception/luncheon will be held at the church following services.  Inurnment will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery of Kellogg.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the American Lutheran Church, 16 E. Riverside Ave., Kellogg, Idaho 83837.
