She was born on December 21, 1922 in Hebron, Missouri; Ruth was the daughter of Edward and Mary (Sharp) Loring.

Ruth grew up in Missouri. On January 13, 1946, she was united in marriage to John Lee Reed in Salem, Arkansas. He preceded her in death in 1996.
