“Wonderful, Beautiful, Marvelous Nana”: that’s what her grandchildren called her. Nancy Lian (87) from Kellogg, Idaho, passed away on Sunday night August 10, 2014 after an extended illness.
Nancy was born on December 3, 1926 in White Plains, New York to Enoch and Gladys Crosby. She showed her love for her little sister, Joan with tenderness and mischief. Growing up , she was spoiled by her aunts and uncles whom she later imitated in the treatment of the children who surrounded her. She studied at Guilford College in North Carolina before returning to New York. She worked as a dental assistant and a customer service representative for Reader’s Digest. Later in life, during a short stint at Carl’s Jr., she accidentally charged a customer over $200 for a cup of coffee, which became a cause for laughter for many years. Nancy actively participated in Scrabble games at every opportunity. She passed on her sense of humor, knack for making friends and passion for reading, traveling, and learning to her grandchildren. She was a founding member of the “Breakfast Club” at Pinehurst Bakery. She traveled to Mexico, Norway and throughout the United States to visit extended family. Nancy valued family above all and demonstrated her love with generosity and affection.
Nancy is survived by her children Bob, Jim and Barbara Whitman; grandchildren, Joshua Maxson, Elena Whitman, Wendy Whitman, Bob Whitman, Jr., Gabrielle Gurstein and Tim Whitman; and great grandchildren Carlos, Ashleigh, Michael, Justin, Dominik, Damion and Damian. Beloved widow of Jon Lian, she was also predeceased by her mother, father and sister.
Ever a generous soul, Nancy donated her body to Med Cure in Portland, Oregon. Family members will hold a private memorial. Donations preferred to The Smile Train (www.smiletrain.org). The family would like to thank Kindred Mountain Valley Care for their kindness and support.
