Beloved sister and aunt, Jessie “June” Stein, 95, of Silverton, Idaho, passed away December 4, 2015, at the Silver Wood Good Samaritan of Silverton. She was born June 10, 1920 at the Wardner Hospital of Kellogg, Idaho; June was the daughter of Edward P. and Valerine (Zoellner) Stein.
June attended and graduated from the Kellogg High School as the Salutatorian; during her High School years, she received the Bausch Lomb Science Award and the D.A.R. Medal for American History Essay.
June then attended the University of Idaho and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She then served her Dietetic Internship at the University of Michigan Medical Center of Ann Arbor, Michigan. June then furthered her education and received a Master of Science in Public Health Nutrition at the Western Reserve University of Cleveland, Ohio.
June had served as Chief Dietitian at the St. Luke’s Hospital of Spokane, Washington. She then went on to serve as the Senior Nutrition Consultant for the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services in Olympia, Washington. June retired in the early 1980’s, when she returned to the Silver Valley.
June had served as president for both the Washington State Dietetic and Home Economics Associations. She served as Secretary for the American Dietetic Association and Chairman of the Community Nutrition Section, Dietetic Internship Board and the Future Development Committee. June was also a member of the Phi Upsilon Omicron, Home Economics Honorary.
June received The Mary Rourke Award from the Western Branch of the American Public Health Association for contribution to Public Health Nutrition; she also received the University of Idaho Department of Home Economics Outstanding Alumni Award for major contribution to the field of Home Economics.
After retirement and moving back to the Silver Valley, June has been active in the St. Alphonsus Catholic Parish, the Altar Society, and the Legion of Mary and Catholic Daughters. She was also a member of the Chapter X P.E.O.
June is survived by her three brothers Alfred Stein of Silverton, Idaho; Charles Stein of Osburn, Idaho and Hubert (Becky) Stein of Osburn; one sister Eddena (Bill) Hunter of Ocean Pines, Maryland; she is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. June was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Gertrude and Monica and two brothers William and Gus.
Rosary Services will be held on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at 6:00 P.M. at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Wallace and a Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Alphonsus with Father Jerome Montez serving as Celebrant. A reception will be held in the Church Fellowship Hall following the Mass.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church Memorial Fund, 214 Pine Street, Wallace, Idaho 83873.
