Our beloved wife, mom, grandma, and sister, Janice Marie Turbak Crall, of Kellogg, Idaho, passed away peacefully May 14, 2015, at home, as she wished, in Kellogg. Mom was born December 8, 1938 in Kellogg, and was the daughter of John and Marge (Schmeginski) Turbak.
Mom attended Kellogg High School, and graduated in 1957. She was a member of the K-Dette drill team, and had many life-long friends with whom she still kept in touch. Last summer, the classmates had a reunion at the Elks and Kellogg City Park, as 2014 was the year they all celebrated their 75th birthdays. Lots of fun and memories arose from the reunion.
On April 23, 1960, mom and dad (Larry Crall) were married at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kellogg, and recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. This was the beginning of a lifelong adventure. While dad served in the army, they lived in Georgia (where their first child, Kim, was born), Alabama, and California, before returning to Kellogg to make their home. Two more children joined the family, Kellee and Brett.
For 28 years, along with her sister, Lois, they joined forces and assisted their little brother, Jack, operate Cedar Valley Saw, the little blue shop he owned at the mouth of the Coeur d’Alene River. Mom and Lois entertained many of Jack’s customers with their knowledge of small engine repair, hydraulic hoses, and measuring and cutting chains.
She loved planting flowers, cooking meals for big family gatherings, enjoyed feeding and watching birds, especially hummingbirds. She and dad often went for drives up the river. They also traveled to the many activities of their two granddaughters as they were growing up and she often braved the crowds at Spokane Hoopfest. Her granddaughters were truly the light of her life, and she spent many weekends with them at the family property on the north fork, looking for rocks and watching them swim. She was so proud that they were both recent college graduates.
A heartwarming reminder of mom can be represented by two words and three simple numbers; Blue Rose 405. This was her favorite shade of lipstick, bright and glowing which matched her vibrant, bubbly personality. Those lipstick stained cheeks she imprinted on others will be missed by many friends and family members. She truly loved with her whole heart, and in her final years it matched the love she received from the nurses and staff at Cancer Care Northwest, in Spokane. They took such delicate care of her at her appointments and they adored her number 405 Blue Rose lipstick.
Mom is survived by her husband, Larry Crall, three children, Kim (Dave) Rowley of Liberty Lake, Washington, Kellee (Mike) Mills of Lewiston, Idaho, and Brett (Laurie Ann Lavigne) Crall of Eagle River, Alaska and Cozumel, Mexico; two grandchildren, Megan and Melanie Mills; two brothers Gene Turbak of Kellogg and Jack Turbak of Smelterville; three sisters, Rita (Wayne) Johnson of Spokane, Lois Bening of Coeur d’Alene, and Carol (Chuck) Bottinelli of Deer Park, Washington. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews, and many treasured friends. Mom was preceded in death by her parents, her father-in-law Cleon Crall, mother-in-law Ruth Alkire, brother-in-law Jim Bening, sister-in-law Carleen Turbak, and her cousin and best friend Linda Carney McKinley.
At mom’s request, no formal funeral services will be held. We are planning a celebration of her life at the family property on the Coeur d’Alene River this summer. All are welcome to attend and the date will be published at a later time.
Mom had a soft spot for animals, any memorials in her name can be sent to the Shoshone Pet Rescue, or the Shoshone Cancer Support Resource Center to assist those in need.
