Gertrude “Gertie” Beth Finlay, 96

Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Gertrude “Gertie” Beth Finlay, 96, of Pinehurst, Idaho, passed away October 6, 2016 at Pacifica of Pinehurst.  She was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada on December 5, 1919 to Viola Leona (Gibbons) and Irving James Richardson.  When Gertie was six years old, the family moved from Canada to North Idaho, specifically Pine Creek.  She attended and graduated from the Kingston High School of Kingston, Idaho, as valedictorian in 1938.

Gertrude married Robert E. Finlay on December 5, 1939 in Wallace, Idaho and together they raised three boys, Bobbie, Jim and Rick in Pinehurst and out at the ranch in Cataldo.  Robert was killed in an accident at the Sunshine Mine in August of 1969; Gertie took over the responsibilities of running the ranch and raising Black Angus cattle.  She was a hard worker and she was known to have a stubborn streak.  About the only thing that would get her off the ranch was the chance to go huckleberry picking.

Gertie was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, she had served as a 4-H Leader and was an avid supporter and score keeper of her son’s Little League Baseball team.  Gertie also attended many Kootenai County Fairs, where some of her Black Angus cattle were named Grand Champions.  She loved and enjoyed her family, gardening, canning, farming, crocheting and of course huckleberry picking.

Gertie is survived by two sons Bobbie (Kay) Finlay of Pinehurst, Idaho and Rick (Kathleen) Finlay of Cataldo, Idaho; her grandchildren Brian (Lyn) Finlay of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, Susan Finlay of Kingston, Idaho, Jim (Karen) Finlay of Pinehurst, Idaho, Terri (Rick) Mains of Spokane, Washington, Chad (Jennifer) Finlay of Pinehurst, Idaho, Chasity Berke of Nebraska, LeeAnn Finlay of Pinehurst, Idaho and Richard “Jerb” (Valerie) Finlay of Silverton, Idaho; numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.  Gertie is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, one son James, five sisters and six brothers.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the Our Savior Lutheran Church of Pinehurst with Rev. Ken Bartle officiating.  A reception and a gathering of family and friends will be held at the Our Savior Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall following services.  Interment will be held at the Shoshone Memorial Gardens of Pinehurst.

The Family suggests that memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 911 West 5th Ave., Spokane, Washington 99204 or to the charity of the Donor’s choice.
