He graduated from Wallace High School, Class of 1971, and went on to attend the University of Idaho where he graduated with a degree in Political Science in 1975. Gary worked for the Star Mine as a welder in the machine shop until the mine shut down. He went on to work for the Kellogg School District from which he retired.

On March 17, 2025 while wintering in Yuma, Gary was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. His greatest wish was to make it home to Idaho to be with family. He and his wife, Carlene, flew home on March 31 where was able to spend his last remaining days surrounded by his family.
