Dorwin Hinman

Dorwin LaVern Hinman, 87, of Wallace, Idaho, passed away February 14, 2014 at the Silver Wood Good Samaritan Assisted Living of Silverton. He was born June 29, 1926 in Lead, South Dakota; Dorwin was the son of Melvin and Naomi (Foster) Hinman.

Dorwin attended and graduated from the Lead High School of Lead, South Dakota. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II.

Dorwin started in the wholesale grocery business serving in the Los Angeles, California and Tacoma, Washington areas. He then went to work for Kraft Foods as a salesman. In the early 1960’s, Dorwin managed an asbestos mine in John Day, Oregon. He then went to work in general construction for Mid City Magesite. Dorwin served as service manager for Harte Carter Company (a farming equipment company) serving in Northern California and the Northwest. And lastly, Dorwin served as a facility manager for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Oregon for twelve years.

Dorwin moved to the Silver Valley in 1988 from Portland, Oregon. He married Colleen Hibbard on April 8, 1988 in Wallace.

Dorwin was a member of the Construction Workers Union, the Kiwanis, the Olympia Flying Club, the Olympia Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Wallace Rotary Club, the Historic Wallace Chamber of Commerce, the Wallace Gyro Club, the Wallace Elks and the Odd Fellows of Portland. Dorwin also served on the Wallace City Council and had served as Project Manager/Coordinator for the Wallace Downtown Revitalization Project. He was also honored as the Historic Wallace Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.

Dorwin loved and enjoyed wood-working, sports, flying (Dorwin held a pilots license for land and sea); he also enjoyed contributing to the Mine Heritage Exhibition at the Wallace Visitors Center.

Dorwin is survived by his wife Colleen Hinman of Wallace; four children Donna Edwards of Wallace, Deborah Hagen of Coeur d’ Alene, Dale Hinman of Tucson, Arizona and Vincent Hinman of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; two step-children Corky (Elmer) Mattila of Wallace, Mont (Dee Dee) Hibbard of Lewiston, Idaho; nine grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren, eight step great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one uncle Bernard Foster of South Dakota; one cousin Ellis Hinman of California; he was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, February 21, 2014, at 2:00 P.M. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel of Kellogg with Rev. Art Fleming officiating. A reception and a gathering of family and friends will be held at the Brooks Restaurant/Lounge of Wallace following services.
