Doris Helsley

July 9, 1918 — December 23, 2013


Doris Elizabeth Helsley, 95, of Kellogg, Idaho, passed away December 23, 2013 at the Silver Wood Good Samaritan of Silverton, Idaho. She was born July 9, 1918 at Tikura, Idaho; Doris was the daughter of Forest and Wilma (Jeffers) McGloughlin.

Doris attended and graduated from the Gooding High School of Gooding, Idaho in 1936. She then attended the Idaho State University.

Doris enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve in August of 1943 and was discharged in April of 1954; she was credited for being the first woman in the military from Blaine County of Idaho.

Doris married Wilbur Helsley on June 4, 1959 in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho; Wilbur passed away in 1977.

Doris moved to the Silver Valley in 1960 from Boise, Idaho. She had served as a secretary for the Bunker Hill Mining Company for twenty years.

Doris was a member of the United Church of Kellogg now known as the Mountain View Congregational Church, a member of the “99’s” International Organization of Women Pilots, a member of the American Cancer Society and a member of the Shoshone County Genealogy Society.

Doris loved and enjoyed flying, crafts, needlework, cooking, gardening, carpentry and trailer traveling.

Doris is survived by step-daughter Jane (Jack) Corey of Rupert, Idaho; granddaughter Susan Tankersley of Arlington, Washington; grandson Jeff (Teresa) Corey of Kirkland, Washington; great-grandsons Zach Tankersley and Ryan Corey; great-granddaughter Heather Corey; nieces Gayle Ashment and Sharon (John) Nicklas of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Beverly Nestegard of Enumclaw, Washington, Patty (Bill) Langfitt of Graham, Washington and Lisa Brandt of Washington; nephews Jack (Vicki) Bartlett of Meridian, Idaho and Cleveland Beal of Washington; special friends in the Silver Valley Lois and Keith Dahlberg, Susan and Kurt Copeland and Oradell Triplett. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Dorothy Bartlett and Claire Beal and her husband Wilbur.

A Celebration of Doris’s Life will be held and announced at a later date. Inurnment will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery of Kellogg.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Shoshone Cancer Resource Center, 204 Oregon Street, Suite J, Kellogg, Idaho 83837.
