Daniel Earl Goodson, 85, of Pinehurst, Idaho, passed away on February 7, 2017 at Shoshone Medical Center in Kellogg. He was born on the homestead November 11, 1931 in Lane, Idaho; Daniel was the son of Rex Earl Goodson and Leah Ruth (Nelson) Goodson.
Dan grew up in Lane, Idaho. He lived for a time in Murray, Rose Lake, and finally settled in Pinehurst. He graduated from Rose Lake High School at an early age. Dan entered into the business world selling his first load of logs at the age of sixteen. In his youth he trapped for a living, worked on the railroad and worked Sawmills. He told us adventures he had at the mill in Grangeville and his grandfather’s mill, (Nelson’s in Pine Creek) along with his father’s mills in Lane and Rose Lake.
Dan served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal. On May 28th, 1955: Daniel was united in marriage to Frances Barnes in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho at the “old,” hitching-post.
After serving his country, Dan chose accounting as his life profession. He worked as an accountant for the Sunshine Mining Co., Bunker Hill Co., and Sverdsten Logging before starting his own Licensed Public Accountant Office on the corner of main street in Pinehurst. He was the Valley bookkeeper in logging boots. He considered those he performed services for as, “friends and extended family. Not just clients.” Throughout his life he served his community in many ways including serving on the Kootenai School Board and teaching classes for North Idaho College in the Valley. He tirelessly worked to help form The Associated Logging Contractors, Inc. of Idaho and The Rose Lake Water Association. Moreover, he held the position of President for the Idaho Association of Public Accountants.
Daniel enjoyed the Stock Market, dabbled with lottery tickets, and was an avid gardener. He collected bugs and would pay his children, nieces and nephews to; “bring them in.” With his entrepreneurial spirit he even sold the bugs for profit. Daniel loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed a good fish fry and could clean a mess of catfish in no time. He will be greatly missed.
Daniel is survived by his beloved wife, Frances of Pinehurst; his children: Lowell (Karen) Goodson of Lane, Sandy (Paul) Schlepp of Rose Lake, and Karen (Doug) Overholtzer of Post Falls; his grandchildren, Kristina (Darrell) Bowen of Germany, Joshua (Alicia) Goodson of Newman Lake, WA, Myles Goodson of Coeur d’Alene, Lacy Goodson of Lewiston, Mariah (Taylor) Wigg of Portland, OR, Tori Overholtzer of Moscow, and Tessa Overholtzer of Post Falls; his siblings Vance Goodson of Rose Lake, Wayne Goodson of Coeur d’Alene, Laura Jo Goodson of Chewelah, WA and Larry (Evelynh) Goodson of Rose Lake, S ister-in-laws Merle Goodson of Rose Lake, Betty Goodson of Kellogg and his great grandchildren Bree, Bryson and Brantly Bowen.
