Charles Lorne Longley, 89

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Charles Lorne Longley, 89, of Wallace, Idaho, passed away July 13, 2017 at the Schneidmiller House of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho.  He was born March 11, 1928 in Salmon, Idaho; Charles was the son of Thomas and Myrtle (Mogg) Longley.

Charles enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 13, 1944 and served during WWII and the Korean War.  He received decorations in the American Theater, World War II Victory Award, Asiatic Pacific Theater (1 star), Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal (5 awards), Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Ribbon.  Charles retired as a Chief Boatswain Mate in 1965 after twenty-one years of service.

After Charles retired from the Navy, he moved to North Idaho where he worked at Spunstrand Fiberglass Company for many years;  he retired from Spunstrand in 1986. Charles then purchased Anthony’s Jewelry in Wallace with his wife Pearl and sister Clara.  He permanently retired in 1993.

Charles first married Pearl Bunch on January 22, 1948 in Seattle, Washington; Pearl passed away in 1999.  He then married Mary Edwards on September 15, 2001 in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho.

Charles had a love of life and the outdoors.  He was always active and loved watching baseball.  Charles had played on a Navy softball team for years as a pitcher and outfielder.  Charles also enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood-working and going to the casino with his wife Mary.

Charles was sharp as a tack and his sense of humor was contagious; he remained this way right to the end.

Charles is survived by his wife Mary Longley of the family home of Wallace; four children Carole and David O’Connell of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, Shirley Longley and Jay Storkson of Osburn, Idaho, Chuck and Shirley Longley of Elko, Nevada and Alan and Chris Longley of West Jordan, Utah; two step-children Sue and John Hansen of Wallace and Carol and Bob McPhail of Osburn; he is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Pearl, four brothers Kenneth, Chester, Floyd and Jack and two sisters Francis Jakovac and Clara Bailey.

Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 3:00 P.M. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel of Kellogg. Private inurnment services will be held at the Osburn Day Cemetery of Osburn.  A reception and a gathering of family and friends will be held at the Wallace Senior Center of Wallace following services; this will be potluck and everyone is welcome.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 Government Way, Hayden, Idaho 83835.
