Benjamin Lewis

Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, Benjamin “Ben” A. Lewis, 89, of Pinehurst, Idaho, passed away July 11, 2015 at Pacifica of Pinehurst. He was born July 22, 1925 in Long Beach, California; Ben was the son of Arthur and Gwen Dora (Yates) Lewis.

Ben attended and graduated from High School in Long Beach, California. He served as an Army Medic on the USS Naval Comfort Ship; Ben proudly served our country during WW II, receiving the Bronze Star, WW II Victory Medal and the Purple Heart among other medals.

Ben moved to the Silver Valley after the war. He married Mari Boren on September 5, 1952 in Provo, Utah; Mari passed away on May 25, 1990.

Ben had worked at the Bunker Hill Mining Company Zinc Plant. He then served as a miner for several mines, including the Sunshine Mine, where he had worked for thirty plus years; Ben then retired.

Ben was a member of the Osburn V.F.W., a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Wardner Industrial Union.

Ben loved and enjoyed his family, bowling, roller skating, NASCAR and the Seattle Mariners. He was well known in the mid to late 50’s as a Stock Car Racer, of which he raced throughout the Inland Empire.

Ben is survived by two daughters Sandra “Sandie” Major of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Robin (Rick) Hendrix of Pinehurst, Idaho; five grandchildren Joe (Heather) Hendrix, Courtney Hendrix, Maxine Major, Vanessa (Jeff) Grieve and Stephanie (Tyler) Moore; four great-grandchildren Bram, Logan and Lily Hendrix and Dereon Thurman; one sister Catherine “Cassie” St. Jeor of Mammoth, Arizona. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Ben was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mari and an infant son.

Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2015, at 2:00 P.M. at the Silver Valley Worship Center of Smelterville, Idaho with Pastor Corey Berti officiating. A reception will be held in the Church Fellowship Hall following services.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Osburn V.F.W., to the Disabled American Veterans, to the Wounded Warrior Project or to the charity of the Donor’s choice.
