Barbara Fisher

d. January 2, 2016

Long-time Silver Valley resident, Barbara Fisher passed away passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Kindred Mountain Valley Health and Rehab.

Born in Wallace, Barbara spent her childhood in Mullan, surrounded by her extended family of Harwood cousins. After graduating from Mullan High School, she enrolled in Eastern Washington State College where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education. She also attended Biola Bible College in Los Angeles.

Upon returning to Idaho, she became a teacher in the Kellogg School District, working in four of the district’s elementary schools: Elk Creek, Silver King, Lincoln and Sunnyside. Her greatest joy was helping students develop the same love of reading that she had. When health issues forced her to retire in 1975, she continued to promote reading education as a tutor and as a volunteer at the Kellogg Public Library.

Barbara was always active in her church, and earned a reputation as “the card lady” for her frequent notes to welcome new church members, help celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, and offer support and encouragement in trying times. She routinely corresponded with missionaries around the globe.

She was dedicated to the Silver Valley community and served it as a volunteer with the Silver Valley Christian Aid Fund, the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and the Fuller Center for Housing.

Throughout her life, Barbara loved her dogs. As a young woman, she enjoyed taking her standard poodle, Suzette to dog shows, and when she was older she could often be seen walking with her dogs, first Lucky and then Pico, around uptown Kellogg.

Barbara is survived by and will be greatly missed by her son David and daughter-in-law Terri Fisher of Olympia, Washington; her granddaughters Rebecca (James) Baker of Seattle and Claudia Fisher of Yelm, Washington; great-grandchildren Natalie, Lorelei and Wesley (Baker; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends throughout the area. She is preceded in death by her parents, G.F. “Pesky” and Lucille Harwood, of Kellogg, and her sister Annette “Tib” Hook of Pinehurst.

A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on Saturday, January 16th at 11A.M. at Silver Valley Worship Center in Smelterville. In lieu of flowers and in honor of her lifelong commitment to giving, Barbara’s family suggests that donations in her honor be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601 or the Fuller Center for Housing, P.O. Box 338, Smelterville, ID 83868.
